Daphna Joyce Smith, of Grand Saline, passed away Oct. 13, 2020. She was born in Greenville on Nov. 28, 1927, to A.P. Hilliard and Velma Randall. She married the love of her life, David Jackson Smith, on New Year’s Eve in 1946 after he had returned from his Naval assignment in the South Pacific during World War II. They were married for 52 years and raised their family in Mesquite.
David preceded Joyce in death in 1998.
In the 1970s, they purchased wooded acreage outside Grand Saline and developed the land to create a place that would go on to house four generations, becoming a home and retreat for many. Joyce was known for her sense of humor, loving support of friends and family, and strong work ethic. She helped organize and run a senior game night at the Van Community Center. She also loved gardening, dancing, and reading, as well as caring for her great-grandson, Henry.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Julie Burch and Carla Galias, as well as her son-in-law Don Galias, granddaughter Kristen Jackson, grandson-in-law Jesse Dobson, great-grandson Henry Jackson, and Desmond Williams, her partner for 20 years.
