A memorial service for Nelwyn Smith Ayers, 84, of Canton, will be at 10 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2020, at the Eubank Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Fry officiating.

Mrs. Ayers passed away peacefully on June 8, 2020. She was born June 9, 1935, in Saltillo, to L. D. Smith and Maye Brown Smith.

Nelwyn grew up in Hopkins County and graduated from Saltillo High School. In November 1953 she married Kenneth Wayne Ayers. They moved to Canton in 1989, where Kenneth was born and raised, dating back to four generations. Canton was where they wanted to retire and enjoy their twilight years. Nelwyn was an avid book reader, reading over 7,680 books since learning to read – she had documented every book she read. Nelwyn was a political activist throughout her life. One of her most important charities was always giving to the Shrine’s Hospital for Children. Nelwyn loved her family, friends and her “furry child” Honey Bun. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.

Nelwyn is survived by her son, Stephen Ayers of Canton, and nephew, Mitchell Ayers of Robinsville, NC.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Ayers and son, Michael Ayers.

Family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice Plus, for all the love and care that was given to Nelwyn. Special gratitude is expressed to Charlene Eden, who was her caregiver at home for many years.

Nelwyn, being a giving person and believing in research, wanted to be donated to University of Texas Health and Science Center. When her ashes are returned, she will be inurned at Haven of Memories with her husband and son.

In lieu of flowers the family ask that you donate to the Shrine’s Hospital for Children.
