Services for Wardell Leroy Cox Jr., 73, of Canton, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, at Eubank Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Roberson officiating.

Mr. Cox passed away Jan. 2, 2020, in Athens.

He was born Jan. 12, 1946, in Grapevine, to Wardell Leroy Cox Sr. and Eva Louise Vinson.

Mr. Cox grew up in Oak Cliff and graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in 1964. He attended Dallas Baptist University where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He married Shirley Ann Wood July 31, 1965. Mr. Cox worked 28 years for Irving Police Department before retiring in 1996 and moving to Cedar Creek Lake. In 2014, he moved to Canton and became chief for Canton ISD Police. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and his dogs. He loved his grandchildren and was a longtime member of Sherwood Park Baptist Church in Irving before becoming a member of First Baptist Canton.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Cox; daughter, Kelly Cox; son, Michael Cox Sr.; granddaughter, Jordan Brianne and James Zeiders; grandson, Michael Cox Jr.; great-grandson, Lincoln James Zeiders; sister, Mary Lou King; and extended family members, Amy Mashburn and son, Grayson Mashburn .

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Cox.

Interment was at Morrow Chapel Cemetery in Ola, Texas.
