Eagles seize control of district race

Canton players stand at attention during the playing of the national anthem ahead of their game against Wills Point.

The Canton Eagles took two giant steps forward in their quest for a potential District 13-4A crown last week, wrapping up the first round of district play by topping both Brownsboro and Wills Point in a pair of highly competitive games.

Canton began its week on the road against the Bears April 4, needing extra innings to outlast Brownsboro 5-2 in an anticipated showdown.

Brownsboro took an early lead on the Eagles, edging in front 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the third inning.

That score would hold until the top of the seventh inning when a clutch John Adams RBI single helped to tie the score.

The inning began with Canton drawing a walk. The runner was caught just two pitches later attempting to steal second. Blayne Clower proceeded to reach base via a single before advancing to second on a passed ball.

After a flyout to right put Canton on the brink of its first district defeat, Adams lined a single to right on the first pitch of his at bat to tie the score at 1-1.
