Eaglettes continue chase for perfection

The Canton Eaglettes continued to show themselves as the class of District 13-4A over the past week, scoring double-digit wins over Emory Rains and Mabank to push their season record to 26-6 overall and their district record to a perfect 7-0 with three games to play.

Canton struggled to shake free of the Rains Lady Cats throughout much of the early going Jan. 23, eventually finding another gear in the second half to pull away for a 60-39 win.

Rains held firm in the first quarter, playing the visiting Eaglettes to a 10-10 draw after eight minutes of play. Canton began to find some breathing room in the second quarter, getting a better showing at both ends of the court to build a 23-19 lead entering the half.

The Eaglettes found their rhythm coming out of the break, playing suffocating defense throughout the third quarter while also lighting up the scoreboard with ease. Led by their onslaught, Canton built a comfortable 47-21 lead entering the fourth quarter.

With the game well in hand the Eaglettes coasted down the stretch to come away with a 60-39 win and a sweep of the season series against the Lady Cats.

Leading scorers for Canton included Kenley Nixon with 13, Hannah Manry with 12, Mattie Tullos with eight, Kyndall Nilius and Kayden Prox with seven each, Oliva Norrell with six, Ashley Wood with five and Maddie Welty with two.

Canton wrapped up a three-game road trip in Mabank Jan. 26, adding another season sweep to their resume with a 48-32 win over the Lady Panthers. Game stats from Canton’s 16-point win were not immediately available as of press time.

After hosting the Van Lady Vandals Jan. 30, Canton was slated to travel to Brownsboro Feb. 2 and return home for a Senior Night contest against the Wills Point Lady Tigers Feb. 6. Canton will begin its playoff run either Feb. 12 or 13 against a team from District 14-4A. That district included Texarkana Pleasant Grove, Liberty-Eylau, Atlanta, Paris, Paris North Lamar and Pittsburg.

Eagles pick up first district win
