Eaglettes remain atop district standings

The Canton Eaglettes tallied two more wins in District 14-4A play last week, strengthening their grip on a potential playoff position with just seven games left to play in the regular season.

The Eaglettes opened last week at home, playing host to the Brownsboro Bearettes Sept. 25. Canton and Brownsboro played twice in 2017 with each team earning a home court sweep over the other.

The Eaglettes would draw first blood against Brownsboro this season, earning a three-set sweep of the Bearettes. First set play would be highly competitive with Canton eventually outlasting Brownsboro 25-23 for a 1-0 lead. The Eaglettes raised their game in the second set by outscoring Brownsboro 25-20 for a two-sets-to-none lead. Canton would wrap up the night by taking the third set 25-19 to close out the three-set sweep.

In other matches played against the Bearettes, the Canton JV won 25-23, 25-21 and the freshman lost 29-27, 21-25, 25-21.

Canton returned to the court Sept. 28, recording a four-set win over the Athens Lady Horents. Game stats of the match between the Eaglettes and Lady Hornets were not immediately available as of press time.

Through three games of District 14-4A play, the Eaglettes and Wills Point Lady Tigers are currently tied for first at 3-0, Van is third at 2-1, Brownsboro is fourth at 1-2 and Athens and Mabank are fifth at 0-3. The top four finishers in district play will advance to compete in the UIL 4A Volleyball Playoffs.

Canton was slated to take on the rival Van Lady Vandals Oct. 2 before making their way to Wills Point Oct. 5 to take on the Lady Tigers. The meeting with Wills Point will wrap up the first round of district play for the Eaglettes.

Canton will host the Mabank Lady Panthers Oct. 9 for Dig Pink Night. Dig Pink Night is an annual event hosted by the Canton volleyball program to raise both awareness and funds for breast cancer. The evening traditionally includes fundraising events, including the sale of specially designed t-shirts and auction items.
