Van Zandt County 4-H members may not be participating in this year’s Olympics in Rio but they certainly did bring home the gold.

Members and volunteer leaders were recently recognized for their achievements for the 2015-2016 4-H year.

The evening began with a catered meal and power point that reflected upon all the 4-H members in the county and their many adventures with their projects and achievements.

The recognition ceremony began by recognizing the scholarship winners who earned local Van Zandt County 4-H Scholarships.

Thanks to the Van Zandt Extension Education Association an additional scholarship in the amount of $500 was added this year. This year’s honors went to seniors Colton Caughron and Sabrina Swinford.

Colton, of Wills Point, is a home-schooled senior and was an active member of shooting sports. Colton received the VZ 4-H Scholarship $1,000 and the Bobbi Rogers Scholarship $750 earning a total of $1,750 in scholarships.

The Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars and their Veterans Auxiliary of Post 9171 are once giving local schools a chance to enter the national essay competition.

“This is a chance to offer students a head start on their lives,” said spokesperson Diane Farmers. “It also is an opportunity for the junior high and high school students to voice their opinions on patriotism, American history and democratic ideas and principles.”

The contest is open to all students in public, private or parochial schools or pursuing home study.

The essay for students in grades six through eight is called the Patriot's Pen. This year’s theme is "The America I Believe In."

Members of the Castillian Lodge donated filled backpacks to Canton Elementary School. Principal Kelly Lamar accepted the supplies. Making the delivery were Masons, from left, Michael Bowman (junior warden,) Josh Wintters (senior deacon,) Mac Walling (master) and Jeff Lawley (district deputy grand master.)

On Aug. 6, brothers of Castillian Lodge No. 141 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, partnered with the Canton Citizens National Bank and other anonymous donors to contribute 10 backpacks filled with school supplies for the Canton Elementary School.

Master of the Lodge Mac Walling presented the donation on behalf of the Brethren. Deanne Callan, Citizens National Bank Banking Center manager, presented the backpacks on behalf of the bank.  Jeff Lawley (District Deputy Grand Master), Michael Bowman (Junior Warden) and Josh Wintters (Senior Deacon) were also present from the Lodge.

CES Principal Kelly Lamar accepted the supplies.

This is the third year of the Castillian Lodge “Back-a-Kid” program.  The program began to meet a need in the Canton Elementary School, lodge officials said, because many children begin school without supplies and many transfer into the school in mid-semester.
