Pumpkins galore at Storytime

Friday’s theme for Storytime at the Van Zandt County Library was fall pumpkins. Ms. Rhonda read “Tuttle’s Shell” by Salvatore Murdocca, about a turtle that has lost his shell and finds a pumpkin as a replacement.

Next was “Big Pumpkin” by Erica Silverman, about a witch that wanted some pumpkin pie but the pumpkin that she grew was so large that she couldn’t get it off the vine. It takes a ghost, a vampire, a mummy and a bat to get the pumpkin off the vine. The witch discovers that cooperation works best.

The children each made a paper plate pumpkin to take home.

“Join us on Friday, Oct. 20 for Storytime at the Van Zandt County Library when Ms. Rhonda continues in the Halloween spirit,” said VZC Librarians.

CHS class of 1957 holds 60th reunion

Celebration was in the air as the Canton High School Class of 1957 gathered at the Van Zandt County Country Club for its 60th year reunion Sept. 23, 2017.

Who could guess those youngsters graduated 60 years ago? With all the laughter, stories, memorabilia, and 1950s music, and even a little jitterbugging, the class of 1957 had a ball!

The 1957 Class President Dan Seale was Master of Ceremonies. Dr. Michael Hackney gave the prayer, and Fred Rasmussen led in sharing memories.

The C – DALE CUMMINGS Band played 1950s-1960s music, and took our emotions from tears of nostalgia to sheer delight as Joe Anna Birdwell did a little vintage jitterbug with Dale himself.

Storytime gets piggy

The theme for Storytime on Friday Sept. 29 was pigs. The first book read was “Dumpy La Rue” by Elizabeth Winthrop a romping, rhyming story with exuberant illustrations. Next story was “Wait! No Paint!” by Bruce Whatley which is a quirky retelling of “The Three Little Pigs.”. The last book was “There is a Bird on Your Head!” by Mo Williams a story with favorite characters Elephant and Piggie.

The craft for the day was a paper plate piggy.

“Join us at the Van Zandt County Library at 10 a.m. each Friday for preschool Storytime at the Van Zandt County Library,” said Storytime volunteers.

Peak programs offered at VZC Library

Things are busy around the Van Zandt County Library this fall. There are three programs this week that will peak the interest of many.

At 10:30 a.m., Sept. 21, there is another program in the Van Zandt County Library Series sponsored by the Free State Master Gardeners. This program covers vermiculture/composting. Vermiculture is the process of cultivating worms to breakdown organic waste. This along with the compost will make the gardening soil richer and more productive.

Storytime has resumed for the fall; and at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 22, Ms. Rhonda will be reading stories about trucks to the preschoolers. A craft project will follow.

Compost seminar set for Sept. 21

The Master Gardener Library Series will present a seminar on composting from 10:30 to noon, Sept. 21 at the VZC Library.

“Lou Ellen Bliss and Donna J. Burcham began their composting partnership many years ago in Kaufman in a composting class that certified them as Masters in Composting. Lou Ellen was one of the founders of the Reclamation Station in Canton, a recycling facility. Their partnership then took them to Wood County where they became Master Gardeners. Through the efforts of the class, as well as Tommy Phillips and Agrilife in Van Zandt County, the Free State Master Gardener Association was established here in Van Zandt County. Lou Ellen and Donna love being invited to speak about composting, especially vermi-composting. Children particularly love vermi-composting because they enjoy holding the compost occupants - the worms,” said organizers.
