My concerns about public education in America piqued after reading a tweet authored by the U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. Miguel Cardona. In his tweet, Dr. Cardona celebrated the innovative efforts of schools and districts nationwide to ensure K-12 students are vaccinated against COVID19. Dr. Cardona mentioned “scholarship opportunities” and “prizes” among incentives to encourage students to get vaccinated. The Secretary of Education thought this was worthy of celebration.

Glenda Pauline Roberts, 78, of Grand Saline, Texas, passed away on Sept. 9, 2021. She died in the nursing home where she had been for three days. She was a teacher for many years and ended her teaching career in 2005 in Special Education at Quitman Elementary School.

Homer Bradley Whitton was born Oct. 22, 1979, in Kaufman, Texas. He had been a resident of Canton, formerly living in the Whitton community. He worked as a truck driver and was a member of Canton Church of Christ. He enjoyed history documentaries, cars, University of Texas football and spending time with his kids.
