The news resonating with Freida and me over the past few weeks was not the stimulus check hitting our bank account. Nor the huge cargo ship finally coming free in the Suez Canal. Nor the dour little rice dumpling of a dictator in North Korea firing off more ballistic missiles in Japan’s direction.
In parts of Europe, parents hold off on formally educating children until they are “ready to learn”. In Finland, students start school “late,” receiving no formal instruction until age seven. Finnish daycare centers often replace reading, writing and math instruction with opportunities for creative play. Kindergarten in Finland is not geared to prepare students for primary instruction.
Should coaches be upset over a bad call by a sports official? After all they are human and sometimes make an error in judgement. Does the official receive consequences like what their error in judgement caused players and coaches? Suspending officials for judgment errors is a touchy subject.
Memorial services for Melvin Ray Harris, 65, of Ben Wheeler, are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 19, 2021, at Crossroads Church in Canton.

Ruth Cotton was born on Jan. 2, 1927, to parents Ray and Rufus Feagin Cotton in Van Zandt County. She left this world to her heavenly reward on April 8, 2021, in Van.
Ruth graduated from Van High School in 1943 and married Johnny Hobbs in 1945. They en joyed 66 years of married life together before his death in 2011.
Arlene Martin, 80, passed away at her home in Canton. She was born to Ray and Grayce Guckert Cronenweth on May 5, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and had been a resident of Canton for 43 years.
A funeral service was held for Georgina Wilbanks, 60, of Ben Wheeler, on Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Eubank Funeral Home, Bro. Dan Tarno officiating.
Georgina passed away surrounded by family on April 6, 2021, in Canton. She was born on Feb. 3, 1961, in Tamaulipas Tula, Mexico, to Francisco Jimenez and Maria De Leon.
