Van Zandt County Republicans set their sights on the November election on Monday night, discussing which candidates the group would place on the ballot.

The positions of Sheriff, Constable - Precinct 1 and Constable - Precinct 3 were all vacated this year and currently have persons in place by appointment by the county commissioners. The appointments are temporary and require the positions to be filled during the election in November.

Based on the state election laws the County Executive Committee convened to select the candidates. After numerous discussions, research and interviewing the potential candidates it was decided on Monday, by vote of the committee to place the following on the ballot: Joe Carter, Sheriff; Tommy Monk, Constable - Precinct 1 and Jeff Caughron, Constable - Precinct 3.

The Precinct 1 Constable position had two candidates, Tommy Monk and John Pollard. The committee vote was 4 to 3 placing Monk on the ballot, with several votes of abstention.
