Accident claims life of WPISD student
The Wills Point community found itself reeling this week after a major two-vehicle accident resulted in the death of a high school student and injuries to three others.
According to a preliminary report issued by the Wills Point Police Department, local first responders were dispatched in the early evening hours May 17 for a two-vehicle accident in the location of Highway 80 and FM-2965.
The WPPD account of the accident states, “Upon arrival, officers witnessed the accident to involve a passenger car versus and 18-wheeler truck. Officers immediately began assisting with all persons on scene, including four juveniles occupying the passenger car and one adult male occupying the 18-wheeler.
“While assisting all persons, it became apparent/known that the driver of the passenger vehicle was deceased. The three other juveniles were transported to a Tyler hospital for their injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler was evaluated and released at the scene.”
WPPD Chief Aaron Long noted that that the investigation was still ongoing before adding, “We, as the Wills Point Police Department, want to pray for love and healing for all parties involved in this tragic situation.”
Wills Point ISD officials also addressed the accident with a letter to the local community. Said Caloss, “With the deepest of sadness, I inform you of the passing of a student at WPHS. The student was involved in a tragic automobile accident yesterday evening on Highway 80. The remaining three passengers were transported to area hospitals and are in stable condition.
“Additional counselors will be at WPHS today and the remainder of this week to talk with any student that needs support during this difficult time. We ask that you show kindness and compassion to those around you as we walk through this together.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the students’ families and friends. Just as we have in years past, we will come together as a community to support and remember this student in the coming days. Thank you for your assistance during this tragic time.”
A special memorial service honoring the life and legacy of the Wills Point ISD student that passed away in the accident was scheduled to take place May 20 at 8 p.m. near the baseball fields at Jack Lester Park.
