Filing opens for General Election

news@vanzandtnews.com Filing for the May General Election that will feature open spots on both the Canton City Council, as well as the Canton ISD Board of Trustees, officially opened this week on Jan. 18. Interested candidates will have until Feb. 17 to file their candidacy.

City council positions potentially up for election include two councilmember seats, currently held by Nathan Moore and Randon Sumner, and the mayor’s position, which is currently held by Lou Ann Everett.

According to the Secretary of State’s office, to be eligible to run for a council seat, a person must have been a resident of Texas for one year and a resident of Wills Point for six months prior to the filing date. They :

must also be 18 years of age and be a registered voter at the time of the election.

Candidate packets for a seat on the city council will be available at the Canton City Hall building, located at 201 N Buffalo St, during normal business hours.

Positions on the board of trustees that will become available include spots six and seven, which are currently held by Josh Wilkerson and Dr. Leslea Evans.

Candidacy packets for a seat on the board of trustees are currently available for pick-up at the Canton ISD Administration office, located at 1045 S Buffalo St.

To be eligible to run for a school board position in Texas, a person must have been a resident of the state for one year and a resident of the district he or she wishes to serve in for six months prior to the filing deadline.

Additional requirements include that the person must be 18 years of age and a registered voter at the time of the election.

Local election day is slated for May 6. A person is eligible to vote if they are a United States citizen; are a resident of the county where they submit their voting application, are at least 18 years old on election day, are not a convicted felon and have not been declared mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated. Some felons may be eligible to vote if they have completed their sentences, probation or parole.
