The members of the Captain James Burleson Chapter, US Daughters of 1812, and the James Pinckney Henderson Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, met in Canton at the Sarah Norman Van Zandt County Public Library Oct. 22 in the Buchanan Room.

The members enjoyed programs given by Becky Rosson on the Makers of the 1812 US Flag and presented by Pat Thibodeau on the Native American Code Talkers.

Plans are in the works to celebrate the 175th Birthday of Van Zandt County March 25, 2023 with a garden party at the Blackwell House.

Commemoration of the grave marking of the Citizen of the Republic of Texas and Early Settler of the Free State of Van Zandt, Elvira Engledow, will be held March 25, 2023 at the Blackwell House.

The United States Daughters of 1812 is a women’s volunteer service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving and increasing knowledge of the history of the American people by the preservation of documents and relics; marking of historic spots; recording of family histories and traditions; celebration of patriotic anniversaries; and teaching and emphasizing the heroic deeds of the civil, military, and naval life of those who molded this Government between the close of the American Revolution and the close of the War of 1812.

The purpose of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas is to perpetuate the memory and spirit of those who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas; provide educational programs of the highest caliber in coordination with Texas school districts and the Texas Education Agency, as well as programs for the public; encourage research into early Texas records, preserve historic documents and encourage the publication of historic records; and secure and memorialize historic sites.
