Special meeting held to discuss upcoming election

davidb@vanzandtnews.com Appointments and notices regarding items dealing with the Tuesday, Nov. 8 General Election dominated a seven- minute special called meeting of the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court Aug. 18.

A list of election judges for the 2022-23 year were approved by the commissioners’ court following a presentation by VZC Clerk Susan Strickland.

“These appointments are usually for a two-year period but this time, I am recommending one year on this due to the fact that we usually have to make some changes on this list at some point within a year,” pointed out Strickland to the commissioners’ court. “We have election judges for all polling locations.”

A Notice of General Election for Nov. 8 was also approved by the commissioners’ court following a separate recommendation by Strickland. There will be 18 polling locations for the Nov. 8 General Election, according to the VZC Clerk.

It was announced by Strickland and the commissioners’ court that all Early Voting for the Nov. 8 General Election in VZC will take place at the Sarah Norman/VZC Library (317 First Monday Lane) on FM 859 near State Highway 64 in Canton.

Early Voting will begin Monday, Oct. 24 and conclude Friday, Nov. 4, according to the VZC Clerk’s office. The Early Voting hours will be as follows (subject to change): -Monday, Oct. 24 through Friday, Oct. 28: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

-Saturday, Oct. 29: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

-Sunday, Oct. 30: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

-Monday, Oct. 31 through Friday, Nov. 4: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Other important dates for the Nov. 8 General Election were released by the VZC Clerk’s office and they are as follows: Tuesday, Oct. 11: Last day to register to vote; Friday, Oct. 28: Last day to receive application for ballot by mail; Monday, Nov. 7: Delivery of election equipment; Tuesday, Nov. 8: Election Day; and Wednesday, Nov. 9: Pick up of election equipment.

Following a separate recommendation by Strickland, an Order of General Election for VZC offices for the Nov. 8 General Election were approved by the commissioners’ court.

Offices that VZC voters will have on the ballot for the Nov. 8 General Election will include the following unopposed offices: District Judge, 294th Judicial District; VZC Criminal District Attorney; VZC Judge; VZC Court at Law Judge; VZC District Clerk, VZC Sheriff (unexpired term); VZC Clerk; VZC Treasurer; VZC Pct. 2 Commissioner; VZC Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace; VZC Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace; VZC Pct. 1 Constable (unexpired term); VZC Pct. 4 Commissioner; VZC Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace; VZC Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace; and VZC Pct. 3 Constable (unexpired term).

No action was taken by the commissioners’ court Aug. 18 regarding entering into an interlocal agreement with Hunt County ‘piggy-backing’ onto the L3 Harris contract.

The next regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in the VZC Courthouse.
