One lucky man in Edgewood has won a $250,000 Texas Lottery scratch off ticket prize, thanks in part to Newman’s Convenience Store cashier Mary Erwin.

Newman’s, off Highway 80 in Edgewood, is a popular spot for passersby, with a steady stream of customers coming in and out, chirping hellos and goodbyes to the store’s most treasured cashier.

Mrs. Mary, as she is affectionately known to Edgewood citizens, has worked at the Newman’s location for 24 years. Mrs. Mary worked for Jimmy Newman for 17 years before the store was sold.

In fact, the real treasure won might be Ms. Mary herself, daily greeting regulars and customers with a smile and kind word.

Regular customers barely have to ask for what they want before Mrs. Mary is already putting the item on the counter, giving customers a truly unique experience.

“I just enjoy talking to people,” said Mrs. Mary. “I’ve been here so long that I’ve seen children grow up, learn to drive, come get gas in their cars or trucks, and then eventually get married. It has truly been an experience,” said Mrs. Mary.

An experience that Mrs. Mary will likely remember is selling a winning $10 scratch off ticket this month. “I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary but sell a ticket. I can say that I have held a winning ticket worth that much. I was shocked, though, when I realized that it was worth that much. It was the Number 12 game we have.”

The man who won the money has asked to remain anonymous, but Mrs. Mary said she knows him pretty well.

“I have a few favorite customers and ones that I like a lot. I just like helping people and being here for people when they need my help. I am here from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. most every day and I always like seeing people come in.”

Newman’s is now the proud owner of a new sign with the words “Texas Lottery Winning Ticket sold here.”
