There will be a public swearing-in ceremony for Van Zandt County Interim Sheriff Joe Carter beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 22, in the VZC Courthouse, according to VZC Judge Don Kirkpatrick.

Carter was officially sworn in as VZC interim sheriff at midnight Saturday, May 14 during a private ceremony.

The VZC Commissioners Court unanimously announced the appointment of Carter as VZC interim sheriff May 9.

Carter is the current Facilities Director for the VZC Courthouse and a former head of security at the VZC Courthouse.

He was chosen by the commissioners’ court from a field of 12 individuals, according to Kirkpatrick.

Carter succeeded former VZC Sheriff Steve Hendrix following Hendrix’s resignation on April 26.

The public is invited to the May 22 swearing-in ceremony for Carter.
