Martins Mill standout Mia Nixon made what has become a familiar season-closing trip to Austin last week, wrapping up one of the most decorated careers of any Van Zandt County athlete at the Class 2A State Golf Tournament.

Back in 2019, Nixon carded a State Meet-best score of evenpar 142 to win first overall in a loaded field of 2A competitors. In addition to Nixon’s individual success, the Lady Mustang golf team finished as the 2A State runners-up the same season behind the Grapeland Sandies.

After the UIL opted to cancel spring sports due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Nixon returned to the Class 2A State Tournament in 2021. Nixon would go on to card a 73 on the first day of the event to establish a six-stroke lead before dominating her opponents on day two of the event to secure a 17 strokes victory.

Competing at Lions Municipal Golf Course last week, Nixon began her quest for a third consecutive State title by shooting an opening round 69 May 16. Hannah Nimmo of Wolfe City sat in second after shooting a 71, and Avery Burns of Mason sat in third after shooting a 79.

Any chance of a potential letdown were quickly put to rest during the early stages of the second and final round as Nixon blistered the course on her way to a 67 and another 2A State Title.

Top individual finishers at the State Tournament included Nixon carding a two-day total of 136, followed by Nimmo carding a two-day total of 151, Burns carding a two-day total of 161, and Maggie Yarbrough of Muenster and Brooke Caldwell of Goldthwaite each carding a two-day total of 164.

Nixon, now a three-time individual State Champion in 2A golf, was also a member of the State Championship winning Martins Mill Lady Mustang basketball team that went 39-0 in 2019 and was recently recognized as one of the top-100 greatest girls basketball teams in the 100 year history of the UIL.

Nixon’s appearance at Lions Municipal Golf Course marked the 20th consecutive season in which a Martins Mill golfer or team has appeared at the State Golf Tournament.

Class 4A Golf Tournament

While Nixon was dominating at Lions Municipal Golf Course representing Martins Mill, the Canton Eaglette golf program was teeing it up nearby at Legends Golf Course May 16-17.

Indiviudal results for Canton included Caroline Stern posting a two-day total of 177, followed by Taryn Clatyon with 179, Katie Wilkerson with 195, Bella Irwin with 198, Jayme Robertson with 200.

Canton finished eighth overall with a two-day team total of 748, finishing behind Argyle (620), Midlothian Heritage (636), Andrews (658), Fredericksburg (694), Bullard (702), Seminole (711) and Comal Davenport (732) and ahead of La Vernia (764), Salado (780), China Spring (790) and Lake Belton (804).
