Colfax Homecoming event to resume
After a two-year hiatus Colfax Homecoming is back on the calendar. The beloved tradition of the Colfax community will resume Aug. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Colfax United Methodist Church.
As in the past, the worship service will be followed by a brief business meeting and covered dish luncheon in the fellowship hall. Officers have also agreed to invite descendants of Commodore Washington Tunnell and Harriet Rebecca Rusk, who for more than 20 years have held their reunion the previous day, to join the homecoming festivities. This decision was made in an attempt to revive support of both events, according to Homecoming Secretary Joan Driver.
Family records compiled by David Tunnell of Lake Havasu City, AZ, son of Commie and Doris Tunnell, will be available for viewing after lunch. Homecoming has been an annual event at Colfax since 1912 and was never cancelled during war or national hardship until 2020. It has been an opportunity each year to worship together, renew friendships, and share stories of the values of hardy families that founded the rural community more than 150 years ago.
Attendance does not require a long personal history with Colfax, said President Harold Ray Rash of Athens. Anyone who resides in the area, has friends there, enjoys country life or can find Colfax on a map is welcome to attend.
