City remains well ahead of 2021 pace

The office of Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar released its latest monthly sales tax revenue last week indicating that five out of seven local entities had posted sales tax revenue gains when comparing against the same period from the previous year.

Wills Point finished the month with the largest negative dollar change, receiving a payment of $137,242.90 in August. That total was $8,327.69 less than the $145,570.59 payment the city received at the same time last year.

Edom also took a step back for the month, following a .96 percent drop in sales tax revenue collections in the month of July with a 9.94 percent drop in sales tax revenue collections for the month of August.

Grand Saline easily enjoyed the best month of any local city as collections increased 84.51 percent from $58,629.27 in August 2021 up to $108,177.28 in August 2022. In addition to posting the largest percentage change of any county city. Grand Saline also posted the largest dollar change.

The City of Canton also enjoyed a solid month as collections grew $ 15,000 or 3.2 percent over the $468,960.65 payment received at the same time last year.

Van, which saw a $6,599.73 increase when comparing sales tax revenues from July 2022 against July 2021, continued its strong mid-year push with revenues increasing $10,060.41 from $99,005.48 in August 2021 up to $109,065.89 in August 2022.

Edgewood and Fruitvale rounded out the list of local gainers with collections increasing by $2,380.16 and $1,932.87 respectively when comparing against the same time period from the previous year.

Combined, the cities of Canton, Edgewood, Edom, Fruitvale, Grand Saline, Van and Wills Point saw an increase of $70,311.05 when comparing against collection totals recorded during August 2021.

In announcing the news, Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar stated this his office would be sending, “cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $1.2 billion in local sales tax allocations for August, 10.8 percent more than in August 2021.”

Hegar added, “These allocations are based on sales made in June by businesses that report tax monthly and on sales made in April, May and June by quarterly filers.”

Yearly collection totals Canton, up $330,834.77, Wills Point, up $152,782.14, Van, up $58,520.13, Edgewood,

Saline, up $40,439.92, Fruitvale, up $19,339.83, and Edom, up $5,482.94, are all ahead of their 2021 pace through eight months.

Combined, the seven county cities are currently ahead of their 2021 pace by $655,720.90 with four months left in the year.
