Eaglettes ace first two district tests
Canton players and coaches entered the season with a clear goal in mind, targeting a fast start during non-district play and another district title for the program.
The Eaglettes easily reached their first goal, racing out of the gates with an 18-7 record while tangling against a slate of talented opponents throughout non-district.
The second part of the plan began to come into focus last week as Canton hit the court twice to open District 16-4A play. Canton would ace each of those tests, besting Lindale in a five-set thriller before cruising past longtime rival Mabank in convincing fashion.
The Eagelettes opened their week at home, taking on a highly- regarded Lindale squad in a key district showdown.
Canton would look to be well on its way to an easy victory in the contest, taking the first set 25-14 and the second set 27-25 to move the Eagles to the brink of defeat. Lindale would show plenty of resiliency, staving off defeat by taking the third set 25-22 and the fourth set 25-23 to level the match at two sets each.
Canton would slam the door on Lindale’s comeback bid in dominant fashion, storming back to take the fifth and final set 15-5 to pick up the win.
The Eaglettes kept the good times rolling three nights later, sweeping past perennial playoff qualifiers Mabank to stay perfect in district play and notch their 20th win of the season.
Canton held tough in the opening frame, turning back the Lady Panthers 25-22 to take an early lead. Things would continue to go in Canton’s favor in the second with the Eaglettes stringing together a 25-17 run.
Unlike the previous district matchup against Lindale, Canton would seal the deal in the third set, completing the sweep with a 26-24 run.
Current District 16-4 standings show Canton, Van and Brownsboro all tied for first at 2-0, followed by Lindale, Mabank and Athens at 1-2 and Cumberland Academy at 0-3. The top-four finishers in district play will advance to compete in the bi-district round of the playoffs against playoff qualifiers from District 154A.
The Eaglettes were scheduled to play in Athens Sept. 20 and in Tyler at Cumberland Academy Sept. 23 before returning home for a matchup with the Brownsboro Bearettes Sept. 27.
