Canton ISD student dies in accident
A two-vehicle accident in Canton resulted in the death of a Canton ISD student and injured four other individuals.
According to information released by Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Safety Education/ Media & Communications Sgt. Adam Albritton of the Tyler DPS office, the accident occurred around 7:35 a.m. Sept. 25 on State Highway 243, four miles west of Canton.
According to the accident report, the preliminary investigation indicates “that Vehicle 1 (a 2002 Lexus ES-300) was traveling east on State Highway 243 and Vehicle 2 (a 2019 F-150) was traveling east on State Highway 243 in front of Vehicle 1. Vehicle 2 was slowing down for traffic ahead and Vehicle 1 collided into Vehicle 2 from the rear. “
The driver of the Lexus suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported to Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.
A passenger in the vehicle, Wyatt Brey, 9, Canton, was pronounced as deceased at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas on Sept. 28. The deceased passenger was not wearing a seatbelt, according to Albritton.
The driver of the F-150 and two minors all received non-incapacitating injuries and were transported to Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Canton.
Investigators do not believe that weather was a factor in the accident, calling conditions “clear” and the road “dry.”
Following the announcement of Wyatt Brey’s passing, students and faculty several county school districts donned items of green clothing to show their support to the Brey family and Canton community.
