Traffic along Highway 64 just west of Canton was brought to a stop during the afternoon hours Oct. 18 following a two-vehicle accident that ultimately resulted in two reported fatalities.

According to preliminary information released by the Texas Department of Public Safety the following afternoon, a 2005 Pontiac G6 driven by 42year old Ricky D. Daniel of Canton was traveling westbound on Highway 64 at the same time a 2020 Ford F-150 driven by Thelbert L. Thompson, also of Canton, was traveling eastbound.

For as yet identified reasons, the Pontiac G6 driven by Daniel drifted over into the eastbound lane at approximately 12:05 p.m. where it collided head on with the F-150 driven by Thompson.

Daniel was pronounced dead on scene while Thompson succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash a short time later at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances in Canton.

Weather was not thought to be a factor in the accident with troopers calling conditions “clear” and “dry”.
