Canton Eaglette players and coaches were not shy about their goals entering the 2022 season, putting a district title near the top of their lists.

Canton reached that goal in impressive fashion over the past week of play, notching wins over both Cumberland Academy and Brownsboro with one match left before the start of postseason play.

The Eaglettes wrapped up their home slate Oct. 18, taking on a Cumberland Academy squad that has struggled to find consistency throughout the year. Canton would only add to Cumberland Academy’s woes in the contest, delivering a three-set sweep to move one step closer to a district title.

The Eaglettes set the pace from the game’s opening serve, blitzing the Knights 25-10 to take the first set with ease. Cumberland Academy would put together a better effort in the second but Canton still prevailed 2523 to move the Knights to the brink of defeat.

Any hopes of a miraculous comeback were shattered in the third as the Eaglettes dominated both offensively and defensively to take the frame by a score of 25-10.

Canton returned to the court three nights later in Brownsboro, completing the season sweep of the Bearettes with a four-set win.

Play throughout the first two sets would be competitive as Canton took the opening frame 25-22 and Brownsboro took the second set by the same margin.

The match would turn into a runaway Canton victory beginning in the third as the Eaglettes put together consecutive 25-12 sets to close out the win and this year’s district title.

Current District 16-4A standings show Canton alone in first at 11-0, followed by Van at 8-2, Brownsboro and Lindale at 6-5 each, Mabank at 5-7, Athens at 1-9 and Cumberland Academy at 1-10. Regardless of what happens during the final week of the regular season, the Eaglettes and Lady Vandals will finish as the toptwo seeds in District 16-4A entering the playoffs.

Canton will look to put the finishing touches on a perfect run through district play Oct. 25 with a game in Van against the rival Lady Vandals.

The Eaglettes will take on Paris in the bi-district round of this year’s playoffs in a match that will be played either Oct. 31 or Nov. 1. Additional details about the match’s location and start time were not immediately available as of press time.
