The Canton Eaglettes finished this past week 1-1, following an impressive win over defending state-champion Brownsboro on Tuesday, and a gut-wrenching overtime loss to Van on Friday.

To no surprise, the Eaglettes would find themselves in a tight contest on Tuesday in Brownsboro, against a Bearettes team that entered the game at 16-5 on the season.

Neither team would find separation through the first two quarters of play, as the match entered halftime with the Bearettes holding on to a narrow 14-13 lead.

The contest would pull back and forth in direction of both sides through the third quarter, as each team’s scoring run was quickly answered by the opponent.

The Eaglettes would step up defensively in the fourth quarter, picking up timely stops on two of the Bearettes best scoring threats late in the game. Canton would control the ball once acquiring the lead, as they would put away Brownsboro for a 43-34 win.

The victory marks the biggest win of the season thus far for the Eaglettes. In season’s past, Canton could never get over the hump of beating the Bearettes, while Head Coach Troy Carrell accomplishes the feat in his first season with the program.

Canton would have the opportunity to seize control of the district on Friday night, as a victory of visiting Van would firmly place the Eaglettes in the driver’s seat of District 16-4A.

Canton’s sloppy play, paired with a game-ending injury to sophomore Allison Rickman in the first minute of regulation, saw the Eaglettes fall in a thrilling contest, 45-42.

The Eaglettes never found their groove, as mental mistakes and uncharacteristic miscues raided the night. Despite looking like a shell of themselves, Van miscues continued to keep the game close until the final minutes of regulation, forcing the game into overtime.

Overtime was not kind to the Eaglettes, which saw the Lady Vandals open a three-point lead early in the period. Following several missed free throws by Van in the final minute of play, the Eaglettes had a chance to send the game into double overtime on two separate occasions which they could not convert.

The heartbreaking loss moves the Eaglettes to 5-1 in district play, forcing a three-way deadlock at the top of the standings between Canton, Brownsboro, and Van.

The Eaglettes were scheduled to host Lindale to begin the second round of district play on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Following that game, the Eaglettes will travel to Mabank on Friday, Jan. 20.
