Eagles notch first district win over Brownsboro
The Canton Eagles placed themselves back in the winning column for the first time since Sept. 16, with a resounding 3015 win over district foe Brownsboro last Friday night.
Both the Eagles and the Bears entered the match winless in District 8-4A, Division 2, desperate to reach winning ways and end their seasons on a high note.
Canton quickly jumped out to an early 14-0 lead on the back of Chantson Prox, who notched two touchdowns via the arm of Nathan Parker, in the first quarter.
After allowing an extended scoring drive to the Bears, the Eagles offense answered back strongly with a drive that featured a strong helping of Kameron Shaw on the ground. Shaw would take a handoff over the goal line from inside the 10-yard line, extending Canton’s lead to 20-7 at the close of the first quarter.
Colin Campuzano got in on the action as the contest moved into the second quarter if play, breaking through the Bears’ line of defense on his way to a 50yard touchdown scamper, giving the Eagles’ a 27-7 lead over Brownsboro in the first half.
As the game began to move quickly, the two teams traded possessions with no action on the scoreboard. Entering the second half, Parker and the Eagles found success through the air again, positioning themselves deep inside Bears’ territory. After failing to convert on a third and goal from the 10-yard line, Kevin Velasquez calmly connected on his field goal attempt, which extended Canton’s lead to 30-7.
It marked the first field goal of the season for Velasquez, who was recently forced into action due to an injury to senior Nathan Goodson.
Brownsboro managed one more scoring drive before time sifted away, as they pounded in a one-yard rush for a score late into the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jaxyn Rogers would connect with Dylan Downey on the Bears’ two-point conversion attempt, cutting the deficit to 30-15, which is where the game would end.
The Eagles’ offense, which has struggled immensely in recent weeks, showed no signs of such in this contest, as they notched 374 total yards against the Bears’ front.
Prox led the way for the Eagles’ totaling three receptions for 99 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Shaw paced Canton’s rushing attack, finshing with 90 yards on 24 carries, and one touchdown. Campuzano added valuable snaps as a second back, ending his night with six carries for 71 yards, and one touchdown.
Parker finished his night with the most impressive game of his young career, connecting on 10 of 15 passing attempts for 195 total yards, and two touchdowns. Parker, just a sophomore, has gained valuable experience against tough competition this season, giving Canton fans’ hope for the future of this young quarterback.
The Eagles now move on to a hard-earned BYE week, which comes after nine continuous weeks of play.
Following their time off, the Eagles will return home on Nov. 4 against Rusk, for the final game of the season, in what will serve as Senior Night for Prox, Shaw, and many others.
