AARP Driver Safety Course

AARP Driver Safety Program and the Van Zandt County Library at 317 First Monday Lane in Canton are sponsoring a driver safety class on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The course is designed primarily for drivers 50 years of age or older. The course helps attendees learn to compensate for the effects that passing years have on eyesight, hearing, and reflexes. Most participants will qualify for insurance premium reductions of up to 10% off their policy cost for the next three years. Cost for the class is a nominal fee for materials only. To enroll for the class, contact Marvin Edwards at (903) 340-5058. Class size is limited, so please call and enroll to make sure you have a space saved.

Eaglettes dig deep, outlast Lady Lions

The Canton Eaglettes were the class of the field in District 16-4A this season, posting a perfect 12-0 record against a schedule that included Athens, Brownsboro, Cumberland Academy, Lindale, Mabank and Van.

A 17-year old male suspect was arrested and booked into the Van Zandt County Jail on Capital Murder charges following a joint operation that included both the Grand Saline Police Department and United States Marshal Service Oct. 25.

The Canton High School marching band had a successful weekend at the Area level contest this past Saturday, earning first place overall and qualifying for the UIL State Competition. This marks the 14th straight marching year in a row that the ‘Mighty Band from Eagleland’ has qualified for State, dating back to 1996.

Former District 2 Texas State Representative Dan Flynn is being remembered by a number of local and state individuals who worked for him or with him over a number of years. Flynn, a resident of Van Zandt County, passed away peacefully Oct. 28.

County jail receives clean inspection report

Van Zandt County Judge Don Kirkpatrick announced during the regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court Oct. 26 that the Texas Commission on Jail Standards has issued a ‘Certificate of Compliance’ to the VZC Jail.
