Boat capsizes, two children die

ashlee@themonitor.net A boat carrying 10 adults and two children capsized in the Heatherwoods subdivision of Cedar Creek Lake around 10 p.m. June 22 Tool Volunteer Fire Department Lt. Randall Newkirk told The Monitor that the boat lost power, was pushed around by the waves and capsized after a large wave pushed the boat over.

Hall, Money to speak at RCVZC meeting June 23

On Monday, June 23, the Republican Club of Van Zandt County will be hosting Texas District 2 State Senator Bob Hall and Texas District 2 State Representative Brent Money as the keynote speakers. They will cover business that was conducted and the major bills that were passed in the 89th Texas Legislature session.

CASA for Kids of ET speaks at Canton Lions Club meeting

The Canton Lions Club held its monthly meeting on June 11 at Van Zandt Country Club with a focus on an important community service project supporting CASA for Kids of East Texas. The organization, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) which advocates for children in the foster care system, is currently collecting gift cards from clothing and shoe stores to assist teen clients in acquiring shoes and clothing like their peers.

Hope Center Touch-A-Truck Fundraiser

Warm weather greeted those in attendance June 7 during the Hope Center Touch-A-Truck Fundraiser on the parking lots of First Baptist Church in Canton. The community-wide fundraiser featured First Responders, a helicopter, plus farm equipment. A bounce house and face painting were among other items on display. Food trucks from several area businesses were also on hand. The event was held to raise funds for Hope Center’s programs as well as raise awareness of all the benefits that they provide.

Gavin Anthony Cervantes of Canton earned a 3.5 GPA or higher in the Spring 2025 semester, securing a reputable position on Southern Arkansas University’s Dean’s List. Cervantes is a junior Instrumental Music Education major.

Free Autism Parent Training coming to VZC June 21

Baylor University’s Family CARE program is offering a free in-person training for parents and caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on Saturday, June 21, from 1-4 p.m. at the Wild Rose Retreat at Saline Creek Farm in Grand Saline.

Jerry’s Pizza was the host location June 10 for the Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce ‘Mix and Mingle’ event. The event was sponsored by Elliott & Waldron Abstract and Title Company. Among those in attendance were Jerry’s Pizza Owner Donna Coffelt, left, and Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Kelli Ridgway along with staff from Elliott & Waldron Abstract and Title Company, the sponsor of the event. Staff members included front row, Valerie White; Middle row, left to right, Tiffany McBride and Kaitlin Sanchez De La Cruz; and Back row, George Alexander, Stephanie Muzney, and Jennifer Johnson.. Around 40 were in attendance at the event.
