In December 2024, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW 12219, Canton, honored the winners of the Voice of Democracy Essay scholarship competition. The competition began in 1947 for high school students.

Van Zandt County Tax Assessor-Collector Misty Stanberry was one of eight elected Van Zandt County public officials that took the oath of office during a Jan. 1 ceremony inside the VZC District Courtroom at the VZC Courthouse. Administering the oath of office was her husband, Rusty.

The Mesquite Police Department confirmed that four individuals from Terrell were killed, including two Wills Point High School students, and three other people were injured following an accident on Interstate 20 near Mesquite early New Year’s Day morning.

Following his swearing-in ceremony Jan. 1 in the Van Zandt County District Courtroom, new VZC Sheriff Kevin Bridger released the following statement: “I am proud to represent the law enforcement professionals of VZC and to be your sheriff,” said Bridger.

Five outgoing Van Zandt County elected and appointed public officials were recognized for their years of service Dec. 31 during the regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court.
