Whitton FD to host hamburger fundraiser

The Whitton Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a hamburger supper fundraiser on March 11 beginning at 6 p.m. at 3665 Van Zandt County Road 2404 in Canton. Organizers stated, “We will serve hamburgers, hot dogs, Bobby beans, chips, drinks and desserts starting at 6 p.m.. The Firehouse Band will provide live music as well. All money raised will go towards our operating costs.”

Canton Vet Clinic to host adoption event March 4

The Van Zandt County Pet Project (VZCPP), ‘Bailing Out Benji,’ and the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake (HSCCL) will be sponsoring a dog and puppy adoption event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at Canton Vet Clinic, located at 1010 West Dallas Street (State Highway 64) in Canton.

Strategic Plan shared with trustees

As a part of the Canton ISD Board of Trustees monthly meeting, which was held on Feb. 20, Superintendent Dr. Brian Nichols shared an update on the progress of the district’s strategic plan, which will last from 2023 to 2028.

City-wide cleanup set for March 13-16

ETHAN ADAMS news@vanzandtnews.com At the opening of the Feb. monthly meeting of the Canton City Council, mayor Lou Ann Everett officially announced the Keep Canton Beautiful city-wide cleanup will be returning this year, scheduled for March 13-16, Canton citizens may place large personal items on the curb for pickup at no additional charge.

Gas prices decrease sharply

Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 10.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.86/g Feb. 27, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 24.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 40.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 7.7 cents in the last week and stands at $4.38 per gallon.

WPISD issues statement following arrest of staffer

A longtime Wills Point ISD staffer was taken into custody last week by Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office deputies on alleged charge of Indecency with a Child Sexual Conduct. Superintendent Richard Cooper advised district stakeholders of the news in a notice issued Feb.
