Former church employee indicted on theft charges

ETHANADAMS news@vanzandtnews.com AVan Zandt County woman who previously served in various roles at Lakeside Baptist Church in Canton has been indicted by grand jury on a sec- ond-degree felony charge of theft from a non-profit. Donna Corey Drake was booked into a Van Zandt County Jail March 17 on charges that she stole thousands of dollars from Lakeside Baptist Church over an almost four-year span between 2018 to 2022.

The Canton ISD Board of Trustees conducted their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Monday, March 20, at the Canton ISD Administration building. The meeting was opened by Canton Intermediate students Lily Matlock and Landon Whitton, who led the invocation and pledge of allegiance, respectively.

VZ County fair set for next week

The Van Zandt County Fair is slated to kick off next week, with events beginning on Monday, March 27 and lasting through Saturday, April 1. The first two days of the fair will feature a slew of competitions, included but not limited to: Robotics Contest, Ag Mechanics Show, Breeding Rabbit Show, Breeding Sheep & Goat Show, as well as Market Goats, Lambs and Hogs.

Proclamations approved by VZC Commissioners Court

Van Zandt County Genealogical Society President Carrie Anne Wilson-Woolverton presented two proclamations to the VZC Commissioners Court March 15 during its regular meeting. The proclamations, which were both unanimously approved by the commissioners’ court, declared Saturday, March 25 as ‘The 175th Anniversary of VZC,’ and ‘Citizen of the Republic of Texas Elvira Engledow Day.’ ‘Citizen of the Republic of Texas Elvira Engledow Day’ Woolverton discussed the life of Engledow before reading the proclamation for ‘Citizen of the Republic of Texas Elvira Engledow Day’ to those in attendance at the commissioners’ court meeting.

Little Hope Baptist to celebrate 130th anniversary

Sunday, March 26, 2023, will be a very special day at Little Hope Baptist Church, Canton. “The church will be celebrating 130 years of serving our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the local community,” said a church spokesperson.

Open Rodeo slated for March 30 through April 1

ETHAN ADAMS news@vanzandtnews.com The annual Canton Open Rodeo, one of the most anticipated events of the Van Zandt County Fair, is scheduled to take place Thursday, March 30 through Saturday, April 1 at the Zeke Burns Arena on the Canton Fair Grounds. The event, which is sponsored by the Canton Trail Riders, is slated to begin at 8 p.m.
