Governor Greg Abbott announced the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is providing more than $344.9 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for the month of September. The allotments are expected to help about 1.6 million Texas households.
The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society held its regular monthly meeting Aug. 27 at the main county library in Canton. President Carrie Woolverton reported that the Society is making progress on several projects to celebrate the county’s original settlers, including plans for a celebration next March for the 175th anniversary of the creation of Van Zandt County.

Governor Greg Abbott held a press conference at Dallas City Hall Aug. 23 where he signed a disaster declaration for 23 counties impacted by flooding and provided an update on the state’s ongoing response to severe weather and flash flooding across Texas.
