Juneteenth plans coming together

The city of Wills Point will once again serve as the central hub for area Juneteenth activities, playing host to the largest Juneteenth celebration in the area June 18. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Carol Whatley walked into Van Zandt Newspapers one day and said, “You need my help, you need a proofreader.” At first, we were all taken aback by this onslaught of forthrightness, but then realized that we probably did need her help, and after all, she was working for free. She reminded us of that often, and would march right out the door whenever she felt like it.

Memorial Day program draws large attendance

On a warm and windy morning, a good crowd was on hand for the annual Van Zandt County Memorial Day Ceremony May 30 at the VZC Veterans Memorial in Canton. The program began with members of Scout Troop 378 presenting the colors followed by Ginger Pickett singing the National Anthem.

Fourth of July activities set

A number of activities are scheduled for Downtown Canton to celebrate the Fourth of July on Monday, July 4, according to information released by the Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce. The evening’s activities will begin with a ‘Best Decorated Bike Contest’ at 5 p.m.
