New concrete was poured early during the morning on June 20 at the handicapped walkway in front of Latham’s Bakery on the west side of the downtown square in Canton. The repairs on the sidewalk were necessary to keep foot traffic from tripping over uneven surfaces. Photo by David Barber

MAGICAL BALLOON MAN MAKES MAGIC AT VZC LIBRARY

The Van Zandt County Library opened up their Summer Reading Program with Rob Holladay, also known as the Magical Balloon Man. There were 75 children and 60 adults attending the first program. “We hope to see these numbers growing,” stated VZC Librarians. The next Summer Reading Program will be held at 10 a.m. with performer Eric Brittingham with Wildlife on the Move. There were 10 children who received prizes as part of the Summer Reading Program. Those winners are Josie Reynolds, Jude Snyder, Emma Weeks, Jackson, David Blood, Ashlynn Macc, Violet, Audie Cooper, Kase and Tayler (some last names have been withheld.) Get a chance to win a prize on June 17 after the Wildlife on the Move presentation. Everyone who attends the Summer Reading Program gets a ticket for a chance to win.

LIONS AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS

The Canton Lions Club met Wednesday, May 18, at the Van Zandt Country Club with Lion President Lace Deibert presiding. This week’s program introduced the 2022 Scholarship recipients. The scholarship program is funded by fundraising projects held during the year, such as the Golf Tournament, raffles, and First Monday parking. Committee members voting on the recipients are assisted by school counselors. Committee members this year headed by committee chair Anna McDaniel are Kara Ragle, Teri Pruitt, and Lace Deibert. Recipients are: from Canton High School, Alicia Bryant, Carrie Buck, Emma Crossley, Samantha Crossley, Cody Daughtery, Sloan Irwin, and Ashton Norrell; Home School Student, Johnathon Goode; Edgewood High School, Michael Lenamond and from Martins Mill High School, Kylee Lookabaugh and Lynneya Barentine. Johnson retires from Appraisal District

Recently a host of friends, family, and colleagues had the privilege of recognizing and celebrating the tremendous career of Judy Johnson. Judy made the decision to retire from the Appraisal District after 41 years with the organization. Her tenure with the District began at its inception, where she helped build the organization from the ground up to where it is today. The Apprasial District honor her service and dedication to the citizens of Van Zandt County, and sincerely thanks Judy for her tireless commitment to the District. Courtesy photo
