TCEQ to hold public meeting July 25

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) will be holding a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25 in the Van Zandt County Farm Bureau Event Center located at 220 Burnett Trail in Canton.

To close out their 2024 Summer Reading Program, the Van Zandt County/Sarah Norman Library in Canton hosted a ‘Splash Extravaganza’ for the kids July 19 featuring water slides, bounce houses, and snow cones. A good turnout was on hand to celebrate another successful Summer Reading Program at the library.

The July meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, July 22, at the Van Zandt County Farm Bureau Conference Center located at 220 Burnett Trail in Canton.

FEMA issues alert about fraud after a disaster

Texans should be aware that con artists and criminals may try to obtain money or steal personal information through fraud or identity theft after Hurricane Beryl. In some cases, thieves try to apply for FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) assistance using names, addresses, and Social Security numbers they have stolen from survivors.

Lamont discusses city’s Comprehensive Plan

City of Canton Director of Operations Peter Lamont was the guest speaker July 10 during the weekly Canton Lions Club Luncheon at the Van Zandt Country Club. Lamont, who was introduced by Canton Lions Club President Jonathan Helvey, discussed the city’s 10-year Comprehensive Plan during his presentation at the luncheon.

Salary Grievance Committee members selected

davidb@vanzandtnews.com Members of the 2024 Van Zandt County Salary Grievance Committee were selected during a drawing held as part of the July 11 regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court. Two options were presented by VZC Judge Andy Reese to the commissioners’ court on how the selection of the VZC Salary Grievance Committee members would take place.
