SPCA seizes 14 animals from property

The SPCA of Texas and the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office served a search and seizure warrant at a property in Van Zandt County, before removing 14 animals from the property June 10. The animals included five dogs, five koi fish, two cats, one macaw and one deceased cockatoo. The SPCA of Texas has closed all adoption locations for at least the next two weeks out of an abundance of caution due to exposure of canine distemper virus. Recently, many shelters in North Texas have been facing similar outbreaks.

This is the second part of An Airman’s Tale, a real-life story of a plane navigator in World War II, his best friend and his deep love for his family. John Parker, a resident of Kodiak, Alaska, contacted me with the story of Lt. Henry F. Hubbard, a native of Canton, Texas, who died on June 11, 1942, as a result of his B24 being shot down over Kiska, Alaska, in World War II.

VZC Sheriff’s Office deputy arrested on drug charges

Jon Phillips, a deputy with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested last weekend on drug-related charges in Hopkins County. Phillips was arrested Saturday, June 11, and booked into the Hopkins County Jail on three charges consisting of: possession of a controlled substance >= 200g <400g, possession of a controlled substance <1 g, and possession of marijuana <2 oz.

Activities abound at Van Zandt County Library

VZC Library Summer Reading Program and Friday events will begin June 10. The library will have performers the first three Fridays, then a Bounce House extravaganza the Friday after that, followed by an Animal Sleepover the next Thursday and Friday. The Summer Reading Program theme is ‘Oceans of Possibilities.’ “We will be handing out the summer reading logs on June 10 so kids can keep up with their reading time. At the end of the summer, you turn in you reading log to get a prize,” stated VZC Librarians.

Gov. Abbott honors U.S. service members, Boy Scouts

Governor Greg Abbott delivered the keynote address at the A Day of Thanks and Remembrance Memorial Day event at Teague Park in Longview. Addressing a packed crowd of families, law enforcement, and veterans, the Governor honored the men and women who have died in service to the United States and reminded Texans of the tremendous gratitude all Americans owe to those who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom.

Water-well contractor accidentally discovers first major Texas oilfield June 9, 1894 On this day in 1894, a water-well contractor accidentally discovered the Corsicana oilfield, the first in Texas to produce oil and gas in significant quantities, while seeking a new water source for the city of Corsicana. Civic leaders of Corsicana needed a dependable water supply to promote commercial development.
