Canton ISD was among the schools in Van Zandt County that returned to classes last week. The school district opened their 2025-26 school year Aug. 13 on a cloudy, rainy day. All six Van Zandt County school districts have started the new school year.

Numerous public comments shared during water board meeting

In Pittsburg on Aug. 13, with over 300 citizens in attendance, the Northeast Texas Regional Water Planning Group (NETRWPG) met at the Region 8 Education Service Center to discuss pressing water management issues, notably the contentious proposal for a new reservoir on Grand Saline Creek.
Van Zandt County Pct. 1 Commissioner and Saline Creek resident Mitch Curtis shared his opposition to the proposed Saline Creek Reservoir project Aug. 13 during a meeting of the Northeast Texas Regional Water Planning Group in Pittsburg. The board voted unanimously to deny the City of Canton’s water application permit.

Van Zandt County Pct. 2 Commissioner Cliff Williams expressed his support for a resolution opposing the Grand Saline Creek Reservoir Project during a special called meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court Aug. 5. TFFC temporarily closed for public visitation

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens has temporarily closed to visitors while Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) completes emergency repairs to a steel column that structurally supports the main visitor center building.
