The Republican Women of Van Zandt County hosted a training on election integrity in conjunction with the Leadership Institute. David Ferguson presented 40 attendees with strategies in planning to run an organized, focused campaign.
Van Zandt Newspaper staffers celebrated a special milestone this week, recognizing David Barber with a party to mark his 40th anniversary with the company. Barber has filled a variety of roles during his 40-year run at Van Zandt Newspapers, working as an ad sales rep, staff writer and sports correspondent. One of Barber’s most impressive accomplishments was a 443-consecutive game streak of covering the Van Vandal football team in person that came to an end in August 2021 due to a bout of COVID. Members of the Captain James Burleson Chapter, US Daughters of 1812, and the James Pinckney Henderson Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, met in Canton July 23. The theme was “Flags Galore!” Carrie Anne Wilson-Woolverton spoke about the Flag of 1812 and flags during the Republic of Texas, and Tom Clinkscales provided the program on the flags of the Confederacy.
The Canton Lions Club District 2-2X met July 27 at the Van Zandt Country Club with Lion President Tanya Watkins presiding. This week’s program was provided by Russell Hopkins, Director of Public Health Emergency Preparedness for Northeast Texas Public Health District (NET-Health) which provides disease surveillance activities within the East Texas counties of Smith, Gregg, Wood, Rains, Van Zandt, Henderson and Anderson. Van Zandt County Republicans set their sights on the November election on Monday night, discussing which candidates the group would place on the ballot. The positions of Sheriff, Constable - Precinct 1 and Constable - Precinct 3 were all vacated this year and currently have persons in place by appointment by the county commissioners.

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society held its regular monthly meeting on Saturday, July 23, at the main county library in Canton. In addition to the group’s regular business, President Carrie Woolverton spoke of the Society’s newest project: To restore the very old Huffer-Rohrer Cemetery in southern Van Zandt County.
