The City of Canton is continuing with a statewide 57-year tradition known as ‘Keep Texas Beautiful’ during the week of April 15. In 1967, the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, now known as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), created the Beautify Texas Council to help give Texas a facelift for the upcoming 1968 HemisFair in San Antonio.

We invite the local community to attend our next Republican Club of Van Zandt County monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, April 22, at the Farm Bureau Event Center located at 220 Burnett Trail in Canton. This meeting is open to the public and free to attend.

The Trinity Valley Electric Cooperative (TVEC) Charitable Foundation awarded a grant March 26 in the amount of $2,000 to the Texas Star Quilters Guild. The TVEC Charitable Foundation is funded by donations from Operation Round Up.

A good crowd was on hand for an outdoor ceremony on the north side steps of the Van Zandt County Courthouse April 12 for a dedication ceremony and unveiling of a bronze plaque commemorating the historic ‘Victory or Death’ letter authorized by William Barret Travis at The Alamo in 1836. The event was hosted by VZC and The Alamo Letter Society.

With the annual Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce Gala on the horizon, chamber Chief Executive Officer Kelli Ridgway released the following statement: “All of us here at the chamber are so excited about our upcoming annual Awards Gala and celebrating all of our 2024 award winners,” emphasized Ridgway. “This event is not only a time to acknowledge the hard work of so many in our community, the Gala is also the largest fundraiser of the year for the chamber of commerce. The Gala would not be possible without the generous contributions of all of our members and sponsors.

Van Zandt County Judge As many of you, I witnessed the total solar Eclipse on April 8 in awe. The Lord blessed us with low level clouds that frequently opened up to reveal the event.

Decoration Day for the Union Chapel Cemetery is set for Saturday, April 26. The annual business meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m.

As we enter the severe weather season, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds Texans they can purchase certain items tax free during the state’s sales tax holiday for emergency preparation supplies, which begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, and ends at midnight on Monday, April 29.
