Fair, Rodeo continues through March 30

Correspondent One of the most highly anticipated events of the spring in Van Zandt County continues through March 30 with the annual VZC Fair and Rodeo at the VZC Fairgrounds in Canton. Admittance to the grounds will be $5.00 per car and $1.00 for walk-ins.

City-wide cleanup campaign coming in April

The City of Canton is continuing with a statewide 57year tradition known as ‘Keep Texas Beautiful’ during the week of April 15. In 1967, the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, now known as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), created the Beautify Texas Council to help give Texas a facelift for the upcoming 1968 HemisFair in San Antonio.

Fields recognized by council on his retirement

The regular monthly meeting of the Canton City Council opened March 19 with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of prayer. Several announcements were made during the meeting, including the retirement of Ron Fields, who had dedicated 17 years of his life to serving the city of Canton.

CISD to cancel classes for Solar Eclipse

Canton ISD Superintendent Brian Nichols released a statement March 19 about the school district’s decision to cancel classes Monday, April 8, due to the total solar eclipse. “Canton ISD has made the decision to cancel classes Monday, April 8 in anticipation of the total solar eclipse,” emphasized Nichols.

Contract with Animal Protection League approved

The contract was approved following a presentation by Animal Protection League Director Sheila Phillips and a recommendation by VZC Pct.
