Drop in sales tax revenue reported

DAVID KAPITAN sports@vanzandtnews.com The Texas State Comptroller’s Office largely delivered mixed results to local cities last week, reporting that four out of seven local entities had seen sales tax revenue gains when comparing against collection totals against the same month from the previous year. While largely in line with recent trends, drops by the two biggest cities in Van Zandt County during the same month would ultimately lead to a sales tax revenues decrease of $23,791.96 or 2.6 percent for the month when bundling the performance of all seven county cities together.

The Van Zandt County Republican Club hosted a special forum at the Canton Civic Center May 9 to discuss the recent rise in property tax valuations. The event, which was originally slated to be held at the Canton Farm Bureau, drew close to 1,000 attendees. Among those in attendance to discuss the rise were State Senator Bob Hall, Van Zandt County Chief Appraiser/ Tax Administrator Emily Reeves, Grassroots America We the People Government Watchdog Committee Chairman Tom Fabry, Hunt County Chief Appraiser Brent South, and realtors Tiffany Koffel and Christy Beckham.

The Canton High School Class of 2023 will hold commencement ceremonies May 19 at 7:30 p.m., at Norris Birdwell Stadium on the football field. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved into the Larry David Auditorium.

Letter carriers to conduct food drive May 13

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 31st annual national food drive on Saturday, May 13. Letter Carriers will join forces with community leaders and others to help fight hunger in Dallas and throughout the country.
