National Day of Prayer program set for May 4

During the regular monthly meeting of the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court April 26, VZC Judge Andy Reese announced that there will be a National Day of Prayer program from noon to 12:45 p.m. Thursday, May 4 at the VZC Court at Law Courtroom inside the VZC Courthouse.

Property appraisals trigger huge turnout

More than 300 people made their way to the Van Zandt County Appraisal District Office this week, bringing their concerns about recently released 2023 tax appraisals before the board April 25. With the primary meeting room well at capacity, an overflow crowd gathered in adjoining offices and hallways.

Local election day set for May 6

The local election season will reach its peak and subsequent finish later this week, as Saturday, May 6 represents the final day for registered voters to cast their ballots. With two heavily contested races on the Canton ISD Board of Trustees, the remainder of this week should serve as a fascinating time for those interested in local politics.

‘Citizen of the Year’

A crowd estimated at over 350 were in attendance for the 2023 Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce Awards Gala April 21 at the Canton Civic Center. The country western theme for the gala was ‘Yellowstone.’ Musical entertainment was provided by Billie Jo Jones of Grand Saline and the meal was catered by the Silver Spur Resort in Canton.

CISD Board of Trustees holds meeting

Two eighth grade students within Canton ISD, Tanner Wood and Abigail Huson, led the invocation and pledge of allegiance prior to the meeting commencing.

The Canton City Council held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 18, at the Canton City Hall building in downtown Canton. The invocation and pledge were led by Mayor Lou Ann Everett, prior to conducting the meeting.
