Starr Cemetery Association to hold meeting

The annual memorial service for the Starr Cemetery Association will be held May 20 at the Grand Saline Old School Museum located at 700 North Main Street in Grand Saline. The business meeting will begin at 11 a.m. with gospel singing and a spiritual message to follow.

NICHOLS ADDRESSES CANTON LIONS CLUB

The Canton Lions Club District 2-2X met Wednesday, April 26, at the Van Zandt Country Club with Lion President Tanya Watkins presiding. The guest speakers were Dr. Brian Nichols, Canton ISD Superintendent and Dr. Angela Barton, Canton ISD Director of Curriculum and Assessment. The speakers updated members on the status of Canton ISD, impact of current state legislative bills, and increase of property taxes on education. Dr. Nichols also expressed how successful the 2023 school year has been in academic and athletic achievements, as well as extracurricular activity successes such as band and choir.

Wilkerson, Evans win re-election in landslide

ETHAN ADAMS news@vanzandtnews.com The 2023 local election cycle would come to an end this past weekend, as Saturday, May 6 represented the final day for interested voters to cast their ballots. While a lack of potential candidates would leave the City of Canton without an election, the Canton ISD Board of Trustees featured two seats, places 6 and 7, in which the respective incumbent was challenged.

ESD #3 proposition defeated

According to the Van Zandt County Clerk’s office, the proposition on the ballot in a special called election May 6 for Van Zandt County Emergency Services District (ESD) #3 was defeated in a 147-122 vote.

Slaton tenders resignation following investigation

Prior to a vote by the Texas House of Representatives regarding possible expulsion May 9, Republican District 2 State Representative Bryan Slaton of Royse City resigned from office May 8 after the House General Investigating Committee, in a report released two days earlier, found that he engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a subordinate in addition to other charges of misconduct.
District 2 State Representative Bryan Slaton was forced to resign from office after after an investigation found that he furnished alcohol to multiple minors over the age of 18 but under the age of 21, had inappropriate sexual conduct with a 19-year-old female aide and then acted to interfere with an investigation into the matter.
