Stalemate continues on proposed salary increases

DAVID BARBER davidb@vanzandtnews.com For the second time in a two-week period, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court took no action on a request for increased salaries covering 29 positions in the VZC Sheriff’s Department. After appearing before the commissioners’ court March 15, VZC Sheriff Joe Carter returned to make the same request March 29.

Voter registration deadline draws closer

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson reminds all eligible Texas voters to make sure they are registered to vote by Thursday, April 6 to vote in the May 6 local elections across the State of Texas. Not all local governmental entities will be holding elections on May 6, and Texas voters should check with their county elections office for more information on which municipalities, school districts, and other local political subdivisions will be holding elections.

1937-2023 Graveside services for Ellen Hendry Wheeler, 86, of Canton, are scheduled for noon Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Oakland Cemetery in Canton, under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home, Grand Saline. Ellen passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2023, in Tyler.

Water tower to be raised this week

The Canton City Council held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 21, at the city hall building in downtown Canton. The invocation was led by Rhett Griffin from Boy Scout Troop 378, as well as the following pledges and presentation of colors also being performed by members from the Troop.

New courthouse facilities supervisor named

Following a closed executive session at the end of their special called meeting March 21, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court named Chris Burnett as the new VZC Courthouse Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society hosted quite the spectacle this past weekend, celebrating the 175th birthday of Van Zandt County at the historic Blackwell House Museum, as well as the Van Zandt County Library. The Texas State Legislature passed a law creating Van Zandt County on March 20, 1848.
