Consumers see price decrease at the pump

Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 3.1 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.05/g Feb. 6, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 21.0 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 3.1 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 5.2 cents in the last week and stands at $4.60 per gallon.

Genealogical Society board takes oath of office

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society met Jan. 28 at the Van Zandt County Library in Canton. In addition to the group’s regular business, the meeting featured the swearing-in of the Society’s 2023-‘24 officers by Edgewood Mayor Stevan Steadham.

Eaglettes look towards district finale

The Canton Eaglettes went 1-1 over the weather-shortened week, setting up a convoluted district finish depending on the result of their game against Van which was scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Canton Band earns five All-State selections

Five members of the Canton Marching Band were selected for All-State honors this past month, continuing the trend of collecting hardware following the band’s bronze medal finish at the State marching competition. Those recognized included: junior Dayton Boggess, brass captain, senior Matthew Bartley, drum captain, senior Gavin Cervantes, brass captain, junior Bill Nguyen, clarinet, and senior Emma Mejia, drum major.

Zero new election filings for city, school

ETHAN ADAMS news@vanzandtnews.com The start of the general election season in Canton has proved to be a slow one, as just one candidate, current mayor Lou Ann Everett has turned in the necessary paperwork in order to declare candidacy. Positions potentially up for election in May include two places on the city council, including seats currently held by councilmen Nathan Moore and Randon Sumner, and the mayor’s position held by Everett.

DPS releases details on fatality accident

A two-vehicle accident last weekend resulted in the death of one Van Zandt County resident, as well as another seriously injured. According to information released by the Texas Department of Public Safety Media and Communications Sgt.
