Gas prices jump for fifth consecutive week

Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 7.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.09/g Jan. 30, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 30.0 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 9.8 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 5.4 cents in the last week and stands at $4.65 per gallon.

Canton HS Theatre shows slated for Saturday

District tied for 18th in Lone Star Cup rankings

sports@vanzandtnews.com The University Interscholastic League’s Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A). The award honors the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas based on their team performance in district and state championships. Using activities and events that primarily took place during the fall semester of the 2022-’23 school year, including team tennis, cross country, marching band, military marching band, volleyball, robotics, BEST, football, congress, spirit, swimming and diving, wrestling, mariachi, and film, Canton ISD is currently ranked in the top-25 of the 4A classification.

Commissioners approve reapplication of VOCA grant

Following a request from the Van Zandt County Criminal District Attorney’s office, the VZC Commissioners Court authorized the go-ahead to reapply for the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant to fund the Victims Assistance Project for the 2023-24 term.
