DAR presents Good Citizen Awards for Van Zandt County

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Neches River Chapter, held its annual George Washington Tea Feb. 11. At the event, the chapter presented Good Citizen Awards to seven high school seniors, one from each school in the county.

City, school election filing ends Feb.17

ETHAN ADAMS news@vanzandtnews.com While the general election filing period for both the city and the schools has started off rather leisurely, the city reported its first action in several weeks, as current city councilmember Randon Sumner has officially filed for a bid at re-election. Sumner, who joins current mayor, Lou Ann Everett, as the sole filers at the time of press, has served as a councilmember since 2019.

Lakeside to host ‘Night to Shine’ event

Lakeside Baptist Church in Canton is once again partnering with the Tim Tebow Foundation, as they are slated to host the “Night to Shine” event on Friday, Feb. 10, from 6 - 9 p.m. This will be Lakeside’s third time partnering with the event.

Local youth wins at Fort Worth Stock Show

Gabe Beverly, a member of Canton FFA, caught a calf during the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Calf Scramble Jan. 21, earning a $500 purchase certificate for a show heifer and the chance for up to $16,000 in scholarship awards. Beverly’s parents are Cristole and Gregg Beverly of Canton. His award was sponsored by Bridge Residential.
