City among Governor’s Public Safety Office grant recipients

The East Texas Council of Governments has announced $4.5 million in grants from the Governor’s Public Safety Office awarded to East Texas jurisdictions and nonprofits. The Governor’s Public Safety Office administers federal and state grant funding to promote strategies that improve public safety, support victims of crime, prevent terrorism, and prepare communities for the threats and hazards that pose the greatest risk to Texans.

Sanders named to Provost’s Honor Roll The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor announced that 576 students have been listed on the Fall 2022 Provost’s Honor Roll. To receive this recognition, a student must achieve a 3.85 grade point average (GPA) or better on a 4.0 scale.

CHS Choir to host Dinner Show Saturday

The Canton High School Choir is set to host their annual Dinner Show fundraiser this Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Canton High School cafeteria. The theme of the evening is entitled ‘80’s Night’. Attendees will be treated to a meal, a night full of 1980’s themed entertainment, and a special performance from the show’s judges.

Davis wins Grand Champion Designer at Flower Challenge

The Canton chapter of the FFA played host to 109 competitors from 18 schools across the state over the weekend for the ‘Four Round Flower Challenge’. In the contest, designers received a different task per round, and up to half of the competition was eliminated following each round.

With recent news that the Plaza Theatre building in downtown Canton was set to be demolished this past week, many have expressed both nostalgia and interest in what lies ahead for a strong piece of Canton’s history. The Plaza Theatre was constructed in 1946 by Joe Marshall Hackney.

State sales tax revenue totaled $3.93 billion in December

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said state sales tax revenue totaled $3.93 billion in December, 10.5 percent more than in December 2021. The majority of December sales tax revenue is based on sales made in November and remitted to the agency in December.
