ETHAN ADAMS news@vanzandtnews.com Filing for the May General Election that will feature open spots on both the Canton City Council, as well as the Canton ISD Board of Trustees, officially opened this week on Jan. 18.

With recent news that the Plaza Theatre building in downtown Canton was set to be demolished this past week, many have expressed both nostalgia and interest in what lies ahead for a strong piece of Canton’s history. The Plaza Theatre was constructed in 1946 by Joe Marshall Hackney.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said state sales tax revenue totaled $3.93 billion in December, 10.5 percent more than in December 2021. The majority of December sales tax revenue is based on sales made in November and remitted to the agency in December.

Those who have an interest in serving on the Canton City Council or Canton ISD Board of Trustees will soon have the opportunity, as the general election scheduled for May 6 quickly approaches. Election filing for both the city and school boards are slated to begin on Jan. 18 and run until Feb. 17.

Hope Center, a pro-life, non-profit is hosting a community open house in honor of Sanctity of Human Life. The event will be at Hope’s facility on Sunday, Jan. 22 from 1-4 p.m. at 885 East State Highway 243 in Canton. Sanctity of Human Life is about celebrating every human life.

The Canton ISD Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 9, moved up from the scheduled Jan.
