SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

The Van Zandt Veterans Memorial presented a $1000 scholarship to Kylee Lookabaugh of Canton, before their August meeting. Kylee is the 2022 Valedictorian from Martins Mill High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council President for both her junior and senior year, as well as UIL State Champion in: Headline Writing, Literary Criticism, and Journalism. Additionally, Kylee was a member of the varsity basketball and softball teams and participated in the “Platoon of the Fallen” program at school and the Veterans Memorial. Kylee said she has a passion for writing and will seek a degree in English and eventually law to be a criminal prosecutor. Desperately needed rains brought a new set of challenges for local residents, by downing trees, flooding low lying areas including the First Monday grounds, closing roadways due to high water, washing away a portion of Arnold Paul Road in Canton and causing damage at the Van Zandt County Courthouse. Despite the heavy rainfall officials with the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal’s Office reiterated that the county remains under a burn ban until the situation could be evaluated further.

Summer officially drew to a close for Canton ISD staff and students last week with classes for the 2022-’23 school year beginning Aug. 17. Many in the district marked the occasion with first day pictures to welcome in the new year.

CANTON ISD FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Canton ISD staff and students returned to campuses district-wide Aug. 17 for the first day of the 2022-’23 school year. Other local districts starting their respective school years the same day included Edgewood and Martins Mill. Fruitvale and Wills Point began classes the previous week, while Grand Saline resumed classes Aug. 22 and Van resumed classes Aug. 24.

Child recovered following high-speed chase

Local law enforcement officials found themselves in a dangerous situation last week, engaging in a high-speed chase to detain a suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of a woman in Edgewood that also involved the kidnapping of a small child. According to reports of the incident, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Downs Street in Edgewood after receiving reports of shots being fired.
