VZC Partner Resource Luncheon set for April 23

There will be a Van Zandt County Partner Resource Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23 (today), at the Los Hermanos Restaurant located at 173 East Tyler Street on the south side of the downtown square in Canton.

Spring Book Fair and Silent Auction scheduled

The Friends of the Van Zandt County/Sarah Norman Library will be hosting a Spring Book Fair and Silent Auction Tuesday, May 5 through Friday, May 8, at the library located at 313 First Monday Lane (FM 859) in Canton.

Helicopter renovated in memory of Virgil Melton Jr.

Correspondent The Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial held a dedication ceremony for a renovated helicopter April 11 in the memory of Virgil Melton Jr. with his family in attendance Melton, a former VZC Veterans Memorial Director, VZC Pct. 2 Commissioner and Veteran, passed in a vehicle accident during severe storms in VZC on June 3, 2024.
Several members of the Virgil Melton Jr. family were in attendance April 11 for the dedication ceremony of a United States Marine helicopter to honor the memory of Melton. Caldwell recognized by commissioners

Canton Lions Club announces recent donations

Special donations were announced by the Canton Lions Club during their regular weekly luncheon April 8 at the Van Zandt Country Club. Canton Lions Club President Sandy Sims shared with those in attendance that the organization’s board of directors agreed to donate a Texas Lions Club brick in memory of Canton Lions Club member Tanya Watkins, who recently passed away.

Child Abuse Awareness Month emphasis discussed

Representatives from the Children’s Advocacy Center of Van Zandt County (CACVZ) recently discussed the month of April being recognized as Child Abuse Awareness Month in VZC. Jana Deen Massey, CACVZ Board President and Amparo Mahler, CACVZ Executive Director spoke to members of the Canton Lions Club April 1 during the club’s weekly luncheon at the Van Zandt Country Club.

Former detention officer arrested following internal investigation

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Department recently released the following information on their Facebook page: On March 16, the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit initiated an investigation into a detention officer for allegedly introducing contraband into a correctional facility.

One suspect at large in Kaufman shooting death

One suspect remains at large after a shooting killed one person and injured another on Thursday, March 26. Kaufman County Dispatch received a report of a shooting in the area of County Road 103 in Kaufman County on Thursday around 10 p.m.
