Marketing major applies skills in new downtown business

She continues to pursue that dream as she opened her boutique business May 25 known as Homestead Trading Company, located at 120 West Dallas Street (State Highway 64) in downtown Canton.

Play it smart this back-to-school shopping season

It is back-to-school season for students of all ages, which means, parents are gearing up for back-toschool shopping. The National Retail Federation estimates that nearly $135 billion will be spent on backto- school and back-to-college shopping this year. With the current inflationary environment, consumers are choosing cheaper alternatives and paying more attention to sales, coupons and discount retailers. Better Business Bureau reminds consumers that coming up with a game plan early on will go a long way this school shopping season.

Trend of increasing gas prices continues

Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 9.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.23/g July 24, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 2.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 58.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 2.7 cents in the last week and stands at $3.83 per gallon.

Texas Drawn Hunt Program opens for season applications

New hunting opportunities and scenery are available to hunters this fall through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) drawn hunt permits program. The program, which issues permits for drawn hunts on both public and private lands throughout Texas, is now accepting applications for a shot at almost 10,000 permits in more than 60 high quality hunt categories. Among the offerings available through the Texas Public Hunt System are hunts for white-tailed and mule deer, pronghorn, turkey, alligator and dove and guided packages for exotic species and bighorn sheep. There were 278,000 applications last year.

Mabank Police respond to local shooting

Mabank Police Officers responded to a reported shooting July 13 in the 1400 block of Pharm Hills Road in the city. When officers arrived, they found a adult male with an apparent gunshot wound to the head inside the residence according to a release from Mabank Police Department posted on social media.

Salary proposal denied by 3-2 vote

In an unexpected move, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court voted 3-2 to deny a proposal regarding fiscal year 2024 VZC Elected Officials Salaries. The decision was announced at the conclusion of the July 12 meeting of the commissioner’s court which was rescheduled due to a potential lack of a quorum for the originally regularly scheduled July 19 meeting.

Barber named to LeTourneau Dean’s List

Jillian Barber of Canton was named to the Spring 2023 Dean’s List at LeTourneau University. The Dean’s List recognizes students who have achieved a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.99 for the semester.

Hall pens letter to TxDOT

Hazardous driving conditions in and around two Canton area spots took center stage last week with State Senator Bob Hall sending a letter to the Texas Department of Transportation in Austin July 14. “I write to request that Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) take prompt action to remedy dangerous traffic conditions at two locations along state highways in Canton, Texas: the exit where IH-20 and State Highway 64 intersect northwest of Canton and State Highway 243 near the west entrance to the Walmart Supercenter,” explained Hall.
